The past weeks have been BUSY BUSY BUSY and I’ve been up to quite a lot, and so I’d like to keep a bit of a log of it here, as well as I can since the earliest stuff I have to cover is from a while ago and since then things have been piling up (apart from the Helsinki trip I made and wrote 2 articles about). It’s gonna be pics with descriptions… like a real scrapbook. 😉
Photo taken on the road very close to my home, where I walk almost every day.
1st of May celebrations with my friends, Reetta, Jenna and Senni. All over Finland this day is full of madness, mostly involving people getting drunk. We stayed safely at Jenna’s place – still going insane, though. That’s what happens when you have good company + good food.
The last country day of our chapter, with Praew giving us more knowledge about her native country: Thailand, wearing traditional clothing and looking absolutely gorgeous.
May 9th, Mirjam’s birthday. (Featuring, if you look closely, the birthday card I made for her.)
May 10th, Mother’s Day, featuring Viivi with rad shades.
Last days in school, featuring my friends, unaware of my sneaky photography skills.
May 13th, practice with the school band, of which I will be a member for the graduation celebrations, featuring (formerly) my ukulele.
May 14th, morning visit, featuring Mr. Stupid.
(May 17th-18th: AFS camp, to be informed about in other post.)
May 20th, Skype call, featuring two glorious Belgian friends, Tessa and Margot. (special feature: stomachaches after laughing too hard.)
May 21st, the weather is insanely happy, featuring Marjaana and Pyrry.
May 22nd, a neighborhood game of Finnish baseball. (The rules, techniques and field are very different.)
(May 25th-27th: trip to Helsinki.)
May 30th, graduations!!! Celebration in school (featuring me in the band) first, then graduation parties! In Finland they wear these white navy-style hats when they graduate, and everyone has a party that is public, so everyone is invited to freely come by and have something to eat and drink and congratulate the graduate. Since I have 4 friends who graduated this year (Teemu, Nita, Pauliina and Terhi), I also attended 4 parties. It’s something else and an entirely different habit than I’ve ever experienced, and it was so awesome! They all looked so great and they were very lucky with the weather.
June 1st, Power Park!!! Visit to a theme park with our AFS chapter. Rainy, but that did not spoil the day in any way. I. had. so. much. fun. It’s always fantastic to be with our group, and then the hilarious situations that occur when you get on a roller coaster together…
June 3rd. Really, it doesn’t get dark here anymore, and this has been the situation for the past month or so now. Good thing I have a cover for my eyes at night and earplugs, otherwise any effort to sleep is in vain. (Not that I really try, as you can see.)
June 3rd, I officially start taking down what’s on my walls in my room. There’s still 20 days to go, but I’ve planned it so full that the early start of breaking it down is inevitable. (It also took hella long, since there was something stuck in every little place, all over the room.)
(^ what I wrote in instagram about it.)
June 5th-6th, Kokkola with Karla and Kamilla (featuring Karla’s host sister, Helmi). Karla gets a nose piercing. It’s also the last time I see Kamilla (AFS’er from Hungary), or at least for now. It wasn’t so nice to say goodbye, and that was the start of a whole series that is inevitable but not at all enjoyable.
But we had an amazing time anyways, having great talks, great laughs and solidifying our friendships even more.
June 9th-10th. After some days of packing at home, I go to Fra’s place in Ylivieska. Without a doubt, it’s purely fabulous. I love this girl to death. (Featuring her host sister Maria, brother Mikke and father Tomi and a journalist of the local paper for an articla about Fra!)
June 11th, Reetta’s birthday!!! I’m so happy I could still be a part of this celebration, seeing a lot of my school friends for the last time (on the polaroid: me, Reetta, Henna, Senni and Jenna) and of course celebrating Reetta’s syntymäpäivä on the actual day. She’s leaving on a language exchange to Brighton this Sunday (14/6) and so it was all perfect! I stayed the night and got to see our other friend, Henna, the next day as well, saying goodbye to her too. You can already guess that that car ride home wasn’t one of the lightest on my chest.
Yesterday, June 12th. (Yes, right after I got home from Reetta’s.) Terhi, Nita, Pauliina and I head out to Terhi’s kesämökki (summer cottage) to chill for the evening. It’s not that far from her house (50km), so it was perfectly possible. We went on the lake in the rowboat, did sauna, SWAM IN THE LAKE IN BETWEEN SAUNA SESSIONS!!! (The first time I was a scaredy-cat and only went in after a lot of hesitating and Pauliina and I went together, but the second time I did it full Terhi-style: brain off, speed on and all of it just in one go before you have time to second guess it. It was epic.) We made pancakes on the campfire, listened to music, enjoyed the sunset, had great conversations. With Terhi going to Switserland as an au pair after the summer and the other two heading off to university, we’re all at a point in life where we’re going in different directions and even though I’m leaving (and usually the one leaving things behind for people to continue in a pretty normal way without me, as the exchange student), they’re also all going to have a different life next year, so it’s an entirely different feeling. We’re excited for what’s to come, but the heaviness and nostalgia is definitely more intense.
Good thing Terhi and Pauliina are interrailing this summer and I WILL BE SEEING THEM!!!!!!
Today (13/6), I’ve been packing some more, since tomorrow I’m heading off to Kuopio to spend 4 days with Katharina, and then after that we have the midsummer festivities, also away from home. So far it’s been a bit of a challenge to figure out how to get all my stuff back in Belgium, and I now have 2 HUGE boxes, packed with stuff, ready for the post. Then I shouldn’t have too many issues getting the rest of my stuff with me on the plane. :’D
